Alumni Council Hails UNIBEN’s Academic Milestone, Calls for Urgent Security Action

The Worldwide Council of the University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) has applauded the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, and the institution’s management for achieving 100 per cent accreditation for all academic programmes presented during the latest accreditation exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the Association’s 105th Council Meeting held on June 13, 2026, at Sheba Event Centre, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the Council, the accreditation success represents a major milestone in the university’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, quality assurance, and institutional growth.

The alumni body noted that the achievement further reinforces the University of Benin’s standing as one of Nigeria’s foremost centres of learning and research.

Council also praised the Vice-Chancellor for championing the proposed ₦100 billion Trust Development Fund, describing the initiative as bold, innovative, and capable of significantly enhancing the university’s infrastructure, research capacity, and overall development.

It expressed confidence in the transformative potential of the fund and pledged its full support towards ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.

Beyond educational matters, the Council voiced concern over the worsening security situation across the country, particularly the persistent incidents of kidnapping and violent crimes.

It called on governments at all levels, traditional institutions, the private sector, religious leaders, and citizens to work together in addressing the growing security challenges confronting the nation.

The Council specifically urged security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Kogi States, as well as other victims held captive across the federation.

The meeting also commended the Lagos State Government for sustaining a peaceful environment and advancing critical infrastructure projects that continue to improve the state’s socio-economic landscape.

While acknowledging the progress recorded by the state, the Council encouraged the government to maintain the momentum in delivering development and public services to residents.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the Worldwide President of the University of Benin Alumni Association, Emmanuel Oriazuwa, Esq.; the Honorable Secretary-General, Deacon Benjamin O. Omere; and the National Public Relations Officer, Tosan Ganranwei.
