The University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA) Worldwide has joined the growing chorus of celebration and commendation following the historic emergence of Professor Sarah Abidemi Akintola as the first female Professor of Petroleum Engineering in Africa.
The landmark achievement, described as a significant milestone for women in engineering, academia and the African higher education sector, has also brought considerable pride to the University of Ibadan community, where Prof. Akintola currently lectures in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan.
Prof. Akintola is also the Worldwide Secretary of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA Worldwide), making her accomplishment particularly significant to the alumni body, which has celebrated her achievement as a reflection of the intellectual excellence and trailblazing spirit associated with the premier university.
The Acting President of UIAA Worldwide, Prof. Terrumun Hembaor Gajir, called on members of the association, the university community and well-meaning Nigerians to celebrate the historic achievement and honour Prof. Akintola for breaking new ground in a field traditionally dominated by men.
According to Prof. Gajir, the emergence of Prof. Akintola as Africa’s first female Professor of Petroleum Engineering represents more than an individual academic accomplishment. It is, he noted, a powerful statement about the capacity of African women to excel in highly specialised scientific and engineering disciplines.
He described the achievement as a source of immense pride to the University of Ibadan Alumni Association Worldwide and urged members of the association to celebrate one of their own who has distinguished herself through scholarship, professional excellence and service.
The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the demanding nature of petroleum engineering, a specialised discipline that combines engineering, science and technology in the exploration, production and development of petroleum resources. For decades, the field has attracted significantly more men than women, making the rise of a woman to the rank of professor in the discipline an important breakthrough.
Prof. Akintola’s accomplishment therefore carries significance beyond the walls of the lecture room. It offers a powerful symbol of possibility to young women and girls who aspire to pursue careers in engineering, science, technology and other fields where female representation remains comparatively low.
Her elevation is being viewed as an important chapter in the continuing story of women’s advancement in academia and professional engineering across Africa.
As a professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Akintola occupies a position that places her at the intersection of teaching, research, mentorship and the development of future generations of engineers.
Her journey also demonstrates the critical role universities can play in creating pathways for excellence, innovation and professional advancement.
For the University of Ibadan, the achievement adds another remarkable dimension to the institution’s long tradition of producing scholars and professionals who have made outstanding contributions in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.
For UIAA Worldwide, it is equally a moment of institutional pride, considering that the distinguished academic is not only an alumna and member of the university community but also serves the association in the important capacity of Worldwide Secretary.
Prof. Gajir’s call for celebration reflects the belief that achievements of this magnitude should be recognised not only for the individual involved but also for the inspiration they provide to society.
The Acting President stressed the importance of celebrating excellence and encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering and other STEM disciplines.
Prof. Akintola’s accomplishment, therefore, comes at a time when conversations around gender inclusion, women’s leadership and equal opportunities in science and technology are gaining renewed attention globally.
Her historic attainment of professorial rank in petroleum engineering could inspire a new generation of female engineers to pursue ambitious academic and professional goals, confident that previously perceived barriers can be overcome through dedication, competence and perseverance.
Pride for UIAA Worldwide
The University of Ibadan Alumni Association Worldwide has consequently celebrated Prof. Akintola as a worthy ambassador of the university and a shining example of the calibre of professionals and academics emerging from its community.
Her achievement underscores the association’s commitment to recognising and celebrating outstanding members whose accomplishments bring honour to the University of Ibadan and contribute meaningfully to society.
As tributes continue to pour in, Prof. Sarah Abidemi Akintola’s historic achievement is poised to remain a defining milestone, not only in the history of petroleum engineering in Africa, but also in the broader journey towards greater female representation and leadership in science, technology and academia.
For countless young women looking towards the engineering profession, the message from this milestone is clear: the frontiers of possibility continue to expand, and the barriers of yesterday need not define the ambitions of tomorrow.
The University of Ibadan Alumni Association Worldwide has every reason to celebrate.
