DELTA 2023: Excitement in Delta North over Edevbie’s development agenda

By LOVETH JOHNGOLD ORHERUATA

PDP faithfuls across Delta North have expressed satisfaction over David Edevbie’s plans for the development of the district when elected as Governor of Delta State.

Widely accepted as the most competent to consolidate on the achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Olorogun David Edevbie unfolded his agenda for the development of Delta North during his consultation visits to the nine local government areas.

Analysing the bouquet of projects and programmes many of the party members said their successful execution will facilitate industrialisation, jobs and wealth creation for the greater prosperity of their people.

Towards the industrialisation of the area, Edevbie revealed that he will immediately breath life into the Asaba and Kwale Industrial Parks, create a new industrial hub in Ebedei, taking advantage of the 100 hectares of land donated by the people and use his local and international relationships in the private sector to attract industries into Ika area.

“My aim is to spark of a beehive of industrial activities in the four points of Delta North, that is Ndokwa, Ukwani, Ika and Aniocha/Oshimili. I am very conversant with the terrain and what is required to improve economic life in the area. Luckily, Delta North is peaceful and with the airport in Asaba, the plan is a quick win,” he said.

“I intend to take advantage of the huge natural gas deposits to establish a 500MW power plant to provide 24 hours electricity supply to support the industries, investors and local enterprises. This will lead to greater generation of employment opportunities and wealth creation for the people.”

The several times Commissioner of Finance, former Principal Secretary to President Umaru Yar’adua and lately Chief of Staff to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa indicated his intention to provide an inner rail system in Asaba to connect Okpanam and the adjoining communities in Aniocha North and South for integrated transportation and development while also harping on the need for urban renewal in most of the towns.

His plans also include constructing a coastal road network from Oko to Patani to connect the riverine communities so as to create greater economic and commercial activities for the people along the River Niger, Ase Creek, Bomadi and Forcados rivers.

Recognising the scourge of erosion due to the terrain in parts of Delta North, Edevbie assured that he would deploy the Ecological Funds for erosion control in Ika and Aniocha areas, especially in Agbor, Nsukwa, Ugboba, Obomkpa and other erosion prone communities.

On education, Edevbie who commended Governor Okowa for establishing the University of Delta, Agbor, promised to grow it by working with local and international institutions to make the university highly functional for all Deltans and Nigeria.

He also promised to establish an institution of higher learning in Ndokwa/Ukwani axis and create a synergy between the educational institutions and related industries to ensure the prompt employment of the graduates.

Still as part of the plan, he said he will revive and upgrade the Skills Acquisition Centre at Obiaruku to provide robust technical education as well as complete the Obiaruku Township Stadium within one year in office.

Showing a deep understanding of development issues across Delta North, Edevbie said he would swing to action to complete all ongoing and abandoned road projects as well as construct new ones to open up and connect many other communities.

He particularly assured on the completion of the Phase 2 Umuebu road, Eziokpor-Umuachi road and bridge, Umusume Bridge and the Ogbe-Asaba road in Ukwani.

In the Ika axis, Edevbie listed the activation and upgrade of the Umunede/Emuhu Rest Park initiated by Governor Okowa as well the construction of pedestrian bridge on the Old Lagos-Asaba Road for easier traffic management and safety of residents and road users.

Others include the completion of Obi Road from the Dein’s Palace to Uromi Junction, the reconstruction of College Road and roads linking Issele-Uku and environ to Issele-Azagba.

To ensure security of lives property and investments Edevbie promised to fine-tune the state security architecture to create an enabling environment for businesses. He said he will speedily provide needed infrastructure for the 181 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at Agbor to beef up security in the area and beyond.

Edevbie assured that he is committed to building on achievements and consolidating on the programmes of Okowa’s administration while at same time refocusing development trajectory on the modernisation of the state and its institutions. The development agenda, he said, will be informed and driven by the needs of the generality of the people, youth, women, senior citizens, taxpayers, consumers, workers and investors.

AGF Malami should be appreciated for ensuring fairness and equal rights in APC.

Abubakar Malami
Abubakar Malami

Over the time, the APC in Sokoto has been a one man show, everyone is been denied the opportunity to fair play. Though I’m no longer a member of the party, being me it founding member who works voluntarily and assiduously for it gives me an edge to be privy to how the party is being run in Sokoto.

I’m shocked coming across a press statement signed by Aliyu Wamakko faction alleging that the highly revered topnotch APC leader in the person of Abubakar Malami SAN is being working for the opposition PDP. The allegation sounds ridiculous especially to people who knows Malami since time immemorial.

This is a man who has been with the opposition and with President Buhari through the thick and thin without ever contemplating working for the then ruling PDP. And I ask, if Malami did NOT work for the ruling PDP when PDP was indeed PDP, of what interest will he work for it now that he’s in the helm of affairs and looks for virtually nothing from the party?

Sometimes, politicians love playing victim and villain in one movie. Else, how can Wamakko of all the people accused Malami of sabotage. Has Wamakko forgotten so soon how he betrayed Buhari and ANPP in 2007? Has he forgotten how he worked hard to give Jonathan t he required 25% in 2011? In all of these, Malami was right behind Buhari in APP, ANPP, CPC, and later APC.

Malami labored the APC from infant stage only for Wamakkos to come and enjoy it when Bamanga Tukur led-PDP dismissed them from the party. Has Wamakko forgotten so soon how they connived with PDP to install Saraki and Ike Ikweremadu in the Senate as against the APC in 2015? Has he forgotten soon how he was right behind Saraki as against Buhari and Presidency?

Abubakar Malami
Abubakar Malami

In all of these, and at the very time Wamakko was seeing escorting Saraki and holding Saraki’s bag when Presidency was hunting him in the CCT, AGF Malami and co were right behind the party and President Buhari without ever contemplating sabotaging the president or compromising the APC’s stand. So how can Wamakko accusing AGF of sabotaging the party holds any water?

The fact of the matter remains that Wamakko has been pocketing the APC in Sokoto to the extent that some of us that were for Buhari (when we were in the party) were considered persona non grata. Everyone in Sokoto knows this slogan of Wamakko being song by Wamakko and boys of “Alu Peoples Party” and “Alu mu kai ba jam’iyya ba” which can be translated as we know only Alu not any party.

So how can a man who uses the ladder🪜 of the party, in this case the APC, to advance his political territory accuses someone of Malami’s caliber of sabotaging the party? It sounds ridiculous and conning. Malami, with his record, cannot be said to be the man that’s sabotaging the APC he labored, at the very time Wamakkos were enjoying the PDP.

What’s happening in Sokoto APC is that some members of the party under the leadership of the member representing Gwadabawa/Illela Federal Constituency and the Speaker Sokoto State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Balarabe Salame, and Rt. Hon. Aminu Mohammed Achida, and of course a former senator of Sokoto East, Sen. Abubakar Gada felt Wamakko isn’t being just to them.

The three APC leaders at the forefront mobilized some legislators and other present and former party leaders against Wamakko’s one man show and unjust handling of party affairs in the state. Because they felt Wamakko was not going to allow them pursue their interest in the forthcoming election, they mobilized and held parallel congresses. The issue is now in the court.

Back to Wamakko’s one man show. Everyone following the affairs of Sokoto APC knows that the APC gubernatorial candidate in 2019 was not the favourite of 90% of APC members in the state. In the contrary, the now Ambassador of Nigeria to Jordan 🇯🇴, Faruku Malami Yabo MFR was the favorite.

Unfortunately, because Wamakko did NOT like him, he singlehandedly installed his favorite, thereby sabotaging the APC’s chances of winning Sokoto. So I wonder how a person with this record of party sabotage and betrayal of President Buhari will accuse Malami of all the people —who has been so loyal to Buhari and APC— of sabotage.

He should absolve Abubakar Malami SAN of his state internal crisis and channel his grievances to his former loyalists, Hon. Salame, Speaker, and co. Malami addressed Mainasara Abubakar Sani chairman of Sokoto APC simply because he was duly elected and a high court affirmed his election. Unless another court gives a new verdict, you can’t accuse of Malami. He knows the law.

The earlier Wamakko knows that the crisis rocking his party in Sokoto is solely a result of greed, the better!

Osun PDP: Adeleke, Ogunbiyi renew battle for gov ticket

By Bola Bamigbola

THE PUNCH

The bitter rivalry that characterised the ad hoc ward congress of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State which led to the killing of two persons may be an indication that the governorship primary of the party may be marred by violence, reports BOLA BAMIGBOLA

The dust raised by the last ad hoc ward delegate congress of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has yet to settle days after the exercise took place across 332 wards in the state. Violence was reported in many of the wards, and two persons were reportedly killed in two of the venues where the exercise took place, raising concerns about what lies ahead in the party’s governorship primary slated for March 8.

In the exercise, the two camps struggling for the control of the PDP in the state held on to their grouse, bickering and aimed for each other’s jugular, while the congress lasted. Findings by Sunday PUNCH indicate that one of the two groups, which is led by Sunday Bisi is loyal to the 2018 governorship candidate of the party, Senator Ademola Adeleke. The other group, led by Wale Ojo, an ally of Soji Adagunodo, is leading a caucus supporting the person that came second in the 2018 primary, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi and other four aspirants seeking the PDP ticket for the July 16, 2022 governorship election.

Other aspirants that have obtained nomination form to vie for the PDP governorship ticket beside Adeleke and Ogunbiyi are Dele Adeleke, a relation of the 2018 candidate of the party; Prince Dotun Babayemi, Mr. Sanya Ominrin, and ex-Secretary to Osun State Government, Fatai Akinbade. While the camp led by Bisi has not hidden its intention to hand over the PDP governorship ticket to Adeleke, Ojo, who has also been laying claim to the seat of the state PDP chairman, but was rejected by the national headquarters of the party in Abuja, has been enjoying the attention of other five aspirants in the race.

Through the ad hoc delegate congress, the party had wanted to elect three delegates in each of the 332 wards that would later elect the governorship candidate of the party. But some political observers had assumed that the congress, if held without major rancour, would unite various interests battling for the control, and position the opposition party in a good stead for another opportunity to occupy the biggest office in the state.

On the other hand, many followers of affairs of the PDP said the stratification of the party into the camp of two major groups, contending for the governorship ticket had lasted too long, thus posing a huge barrier to an amicable resolution of the crisis.

The first sign of an impending crisis hovering round the neck of the PDP before the congress was the verbal attack that the former state governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, was subjected to during a meeting he held with the members of the committee organising the exercise in Osogbo.

In a video of the incident that has since gone viral, Oyinlola was walking along the lobby of a hotel in Osogbo when some people, believed to be supporters of Senator Adeleke, subjected him to verbal assault. Security men attached to the ex-Osun State helmsman had a hectic time ferrying him to safety as the motley angry crowd kept shouting that he should let Adeleke, their preferred man for the governorship ticket, be.

In retaliation, members of the PDP in Odo Otin Local Government Area staged a peaceful protest in Okuku to express their displeasure. Oyinlola hails from the area. The protesters, bearing placards with inscriptions such as ‘PDP, Odo Otin, says no to impunity and arrogance of Adeleke’s family’, ‘Adeleke, stop intimidating our son’, among others, threatened to work against Adeleke during the ward congress of the party.

Addressing the protesters, a former member of the House of Assembly, Mr Lekan Oyediran, said a faction in the party supported by Adeleke was behind the attack on Oyinlola. He said, “Our leader was attacked in Osogbo while visiting the committee sent by the national headquarters of the PDP. A faction of the PDP led by Adeleke is behind the sponsored attack on him.

“If not because of the quick intervention of security agents, only God knows what would have happened. Oyinlola is a person that has respect for elders. That is why they asked us to allow peace to reign.

“Nobody has a monopoly of violence. The National Working Committee of our party must be unbiased. Our elders must be respected. The National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, should be unbaised.

But while reacting, Senator Adeleke, who spoke through one of his associates, Prince Diran Odeyemi, appealed to PDP members in Odo Otin not to further escalate the matter. He said, “Senator Adeleke personally met ex-governor Oyinlola and the matter was raised. As an elder, he took the incident as a sacrifice he must pay for the party. I appeal to our members in Odo Otin not to further escalate the matter.”

Despite the appeal, the warring groups appeared resolute not to blink first as they carried their non-conformist posture into the ward ad hoc congress that could not be said to have been held under a peaceful atmosphere.

The rest of the state was obviously not paying attention to the ward congress of the PDP in Osun State held on Wednesday, February 23, until news filtered in towards evening that a man had been killed in Agberire community near Iwo. While efforts were on to get details of the incident that led to the death of the unidentified man, another heart wrenching report surfaced about the death of one Olamide Aremu in Ipetumodu, not long after he was shot in front of the PDP secretariat in Ife North Local Government Area, during the collation of result of the congress.

It was also learnt that the suspect who was alleged to have fired the shot was later seized by residents and beaten to a coma before policemen later rescued him. A vehicle said to belong to the suspect was reportedly set ablaze by a mob. The Osun Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, during an interview, confirmed the death of two persons during the congress.

Also, during the exercise, there were reported skirmishes in Oba Oke town, and in a ward each in Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas. Parallel congresses were also allegedly held in some wards. A chieftain of the PDP belonging to Wale Ojo faction from Ife North Local Government Area, Funmiso Babarinde, while speaking with our correspondent, said parallel congresses were held by the two factions in some wards in Ife North Local Government Area.

But the Director of Research and Publicity of the Sunday Bisi faction, Oladele Oluwabamiji, said there was no parallel congress anywhere in the state. Although he admitted there were pockets of violence in some of the local government areas, Oluwabamiji, however, said the exercise was largely peaceful.

Fears ahead of governorship primary

Peeping to the March 8, the day picked for the indirect governorship primary of the party, many members of PDP are obviously feeling uneasy, the concerns predicated on the way and manner the ad hoc ward congress went. Asked for his expectations from the governorship primary, a PDP chieftain belonging to Wale Ojo faction, who simply identified himself as Babarinde, said his group had approached the Appeal Committee, asking it to reject the list of those said to have been elected during the ward congress. Babarinde, who said if not resolved, complaints of his group against ad hoc congress constituted serious landmines that might affect the fortunes of the candidate of the political party.

He said, “From all the wards, three names each were written as the winners of the ad hoc congress that was keenly contested between two groups. Those that perpetrated the fraud were not smart enough. If two groups were in contest in Osun State, what was the score of members of the other group that also fielded candidates for the same exercise? The two groups in the PDP in Osun submitted lists of different winners. We have approached the appeal panel to look into our compliant. If that is not done before the governorship primary, then those issues may become landmines for whoever gets the ticket.”

But Diran Odeyemi, an associate of Senator Adeleke, dismissed concerns regarding the PDP governorship primary, and expressed optimism that the delegates elected during the ward ad hoc congress would pick a governorship candidate that would be acceptable to all interest groups in the party.

Odeyemi said, “Our ward ad hoc delegate congress was not marred by violence as many people have assumed. We are still awaiting police report on the killing in Iwo. But as a political party, we have realised that the incident was a cult clash and the police have apprehended the perpetrators. The incident had nothing to do with our congress.

“If we conduct election in 30 local government areas plus one Area Office and the only incident of violence occurred in Iwo and Ipetumodu, it will be wrong to say the exercise was marred by violence. We are advocates of peace because it is only through a free and fair election that a good candidate would be produced and we can convince others to work with us.

“We don’t have any fear regarding the governorship primary. People coming to conduct it are not individuals that can be bribed by anyone. They were carefully selected by the national leadership of our party. I believe all the aspirants are getting across to the delegates that will vote during the exercise. It is going to be peaceful.”

HOW TO SPOT AND PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST IDENTITY THEFT

Identity Theft

By Rotimi Onadipe

Identity theft is the intentional use of another person’s identity in order to gain material or financial benefits at the expense of the real person. It happens when someone obtains another person’s sensitive or personal information e.g. bank account details, date of birth, identity card, credit or debit card, home address, office address etc and uses it for fraudulent or illegal purposes.
Identity theft is one of the most common scams used by cybercriminals. Many people have become victims of identity theft on several occasions. It is a serious problem faced by most consumers, resulting in financial losses of billions of dollars each year. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) more than 650,000 complaints of identity theft were recorded in 2019.
COMMON TYPES OF IDENTITY THEFT:
1. Criminal identity theft: A criminal presents another person’s information to the police for fraudulent purpose.
2. Child identity theft: A criminal uses a child’s identity for personal or government benefits.
3. Credit or debit card fraud: A fraudster uses another person’s credit or debit card to make unauthorized transaction.
4. Employment identity theft: A criminal uses the personal information of an unsuspecting victim to apply for job.
5. Synthetic identity theft: A criminal combines real and fake information of an unsuspecting victim and uses it to create a new identity.
6. Medical identity theft: Someone steals or uses another person’s identity to obtain medical services.
7. New account take over: A fraudster steals the personal information of an unsuspecting victim and uses it to create a new account.
8. Tax identity theft: A criminal steals another person’s personal information and uses it to file a tax return before the real owner files it.
HOW DOES IDENTITY THEFT HAPPEN?
1. Exposing personal or sensitive information to cyber attacks or identity thieves. e.g. when internet users do not log out their email or social media accounts.
2. Lost of handbag or wallet containing personal or sensitive information. e.g. credit card, birth certificate, driver’s license etc.
3. Using weak password which are easy to guess e.g. 123456, 654321, abcdef, name or surname, mother’s name, date of birth etc.
4. Using public WiFi to check emails or social media accounts creates loopholes for identity thieves.
5. When personal or sensitive information is shared through phone conversation in the presence of identity thieves.
6. Some desperate identity thieves search through trash cans or recycling bins to look for personal and sensitive information.
7. Cybercriminals may send emails or text messages, posing as a trusted individual, company or organisation in order to obtain personal or sensitive information from unsuspecting victims.
8. Some identity thieves stand at ATM terminals or banking hall to look over the shoulder of an unsuspecting victim in order to see their PIN, username, password etc.
9. Many users of ATM terminals drop the receipts of their transaction carelessly on the floor while others throw them away unknown to them that fraudsters later pick them up and use the information to steal their identities.
10. Many unsuspecting victims ignorantly give their personal and sensitive information to cybercriminals through fake websites created by the cybercriminals purposely for stealing the identities of unsuspecting victims.
11. When people make photocopy of their sensitive documents e.g. National identity card, driver’s license, voter ID card etc at cyber cafe or business center and some copies of the documents are not clear, they leave the unclear copies at the cyber cafe or business center. Cybercriminals may later get their information through the cyber cafe or business center.
Identity Theft

4. Avoid using public WiFi to check your email, social media and other online accounts.
5. Never share personal or sensitive information through phone conversation.
6. Destroy all documents that contain personal or sensitive information before throwing them away.
7. Before you respond to any email, make sure you do a thorough investigation about the sender.
8. Be vigilant any time you visit the ATM terminal or bank to do any transaction. Make sure no one is looking at what you are doing.
9. When you do any transaction at ATM terminal, make sure you don’t drop your transaction receipt on the floor or throw it away.
10. Before you visit any website or do any online shopping, make sure you do a thorough investigation on the website. Watch out for “HTTPS” at the beginning of the URL. The “s” indicates that the site is secured.
11. Install anti-virus software and other security softwares on your device and keep them updated.

OPINION: Delta PDP Let’s Focus on the Big Picture of Peace and Unity of the State – Akpodiete

Delta PDP

Delta State PDP Stakeholders Should Abstain From Being Economical With the Truth and Making of Contradictory Arguments. Let’s Focus on the Big Picture of Peace and Unity of the Sate*.

It is not truthful to say; the 2006 and 2014 PDP governorship primaries of Delta State was contested by aspirants from Delta Central alone against Dr Uduaghan of Delta South and Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa of Delta North respectively. Bradus Angozie from Burutu LGA in Delta South contested, Godswill Obielum from Ndokwa East LGA, Esther Uduehi from Ndokwa, Peter Okocha from Oshimili and Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa from Ika North East LGA in Delta North contested. So many aspirants from Delta Central like Pius Ewherido, Ejaife Odebala, Kenneth Gbagi, Ovie Omo Agege, Emmanuel Agwariavwodo, among others also contested.

There was nothing like Ibori imposing Uduaghan on the party. Ibori supported Uduaghan no doubt but he was able to mobilized majority of the stakeholders to look the direction of Delta South and Uduaghan.

There was primaries at Ogwashi-Uku on 10th December, 2006. Uduaghan and Okowa came 1st and 2nd respectively, and there was supposed to be a run off for two of them because Uduaghan who came first did not score up to 51% of the total votes to be declared the winner as required by the party Guidelines for that year. Okowa was prevailed upon to step down and allow Uduaghan of Delta South to be the candidate. Similarly, in the 2014 guber primaries at Asaba , majority of the stakeholders pushed for Delta North to produce the governor. Aspirants from Delta Central and Delta South contested against aspirants from Delta North.

Kenneth Gbagi from Ughelli South LGA, Ovie Omo Agege from Ughelli North LGA, Amos Otuamah and David Edevbie from Ughelli North contested. Godsday Orubebe from Burutu LGA in Delta South also contested. Dr Okowa from Delta North won because majority of the stakeholders also looked at the direction of Delta North to produce the candidate.

The in thing is that whether there was official or no official, written or no written agreement on zoning/rotation the party had through State chairman always ‘voiced’ a zoning direction which prevailed. Recall the days of Emmanuel Ogidi, Peter Nwaoboshi. Discordant voices to the direction had always been there but the voice of the party carried the day and it will not be different with the golden voice of Kingsley Esiso .

What majority of stakeholders are now saying, praying for and diligently working on is that zoning and rotation be retained or sustained, irrespective of whether it started by deliberate agreement or by default or accidental or divine. It is good for the peace and unity of the state , and as well, equitable, fair and just. Therefore, the 2023 governorship seat should go to Delta Central!
